INTERNATIONAL HIGHSCHOOL DEBATE WEEKEND
Ljutomer, Slovenia, 6th - 9th November 2008

ZIP, Za in proti, zavod za kulturo dialoga, Slovenia and Gimnazija Franca Miklošiča
Ljutomer kindly invite you to our traditional annual INTERNATIONAL HIGHSCOOL DEBATE
WEEKEND and International High School Debate Tournament in Ljutomer.

The debate format is Worlds School Debate Format. Majority of debate rounds in English.

However, to celebrate a year of intercultural dialogue one of the debate rounds will be
multi - lingual. Pairings will be done on the basis of common language - should not be
English - two teams are sharing. Hopefully, there will be possible that lots of teams will
be able to debate in their native language. That is why it is essential everybody when
applying, including judges, lists all the languages they can communicate in. We will invite
Slovenian members of European Parliament and the Ambassadors of all participating
countries to come and listen to these debates.

The topic areas: inter culture dialogue; inter religious dialogue; safe school.
Motions for prepared debates and for the multi - language debate will be announced
the first week in September.

We expect at least 50 teams to participate at the tournament. Please, have in mind
that one team means 3 debaters. Everybody who comes needs to debate all the debate
rounds. In case you have an extra debater, they will be put in the mixed debate teams -
the vital issue is that everybody debates all the time. Teams (3 debaters) need to be
accompanied by a judge, the rule is one or two teams one judge, three teams two judges.

As we would like to host debaters from as many countries as possible, we are limiting
the number of teams per country to 3. However in case there is bigger interest in your
country, please, contact us and we will see what can we do about it. Because ZIP can not
make a selection when more teams apply from one country, we will accept only the applications
sent by national debate organisations in cases where such organisation exists. We are going
to close the registration when we reach the team cup, so please do not wait and register as
soon as possible.

For all guests from other European countries the arrival day is Wednesday or Thursday
the 5th or the 6th, the departure day is Sunday, the 9th of November. The tournament will
be held on Friday and Saturday, the 7th and the 8th of November. The participants from
oversees are invited to come earlier being guests of Slovenian debaters. It is expected
that the teams coming on Wednesday participate in the classrooms on Thursday morning.
There will be also some sight seeing organised and the optional practice debates and
introductions to Worlds School Debate Format for the ones who are not so familiar with it.

Debaters will be offered home stays by Ljutomer debaters, judges will be placed in
nearby hotel. The participation fee for person (debater and judge) is 30 EUR.
The payments should be made in cash on the arrivals.

All the inquiries about the tournament and registration, please, address to me
at bojana.skrt@siol.net, all the questions about Ljutomer, school, home stays,
travel to Liana Miholič, the coach of the Ljutomer English Debate Club at the
liana.miholic@guest.arnes.si

At the end of this message please, find enclosed the tentative schedule.
The application form is in the attachment. Please, fill the application form and
send it to bojana.skrt@siol.net as soon as possible but no later than 15th of October.

Looking forward seeing you in Slovenia.

Bojana Skrt, ZIP

For whom do we organize it?

We organize IDAS2005 for ALL university students from all over the world.
It is designed for students who want to develop their rhetorical and debate skills and deepen their knowledge on current socio-political issues. We will have various workshops in small groups – for experienced, for less experienced debaters and also for debaters with no experience. At the end of the Academy everybody will debate and have the opportunity to learn from each other.

Basic activities
Activities during the Academy will be divided in three parts:
1.Interactive debate training during the first days of IDAS 2006. This is the main and the most important part. The Academy will consist of lectures, workshops and debates. We will provide further knowledge on debating and public speaking by working with famous debate trainers for students whose debating skills and experience vary and bring together international university students and experts to engage in discussions on the issue of importance, confronting their own views, opinions and ideas as well as those of others.

2.Debate tournament: we will have a real debate tournament at the end of the Academy. There will be a chance for participants with different levels of experience to debate with each other and by that learn from each other.

3.Evening activities: we will organize a kitch-party, a country exhibition (presentation of food & drinks, history, politics, etc. of every country participating – the real international cultural exchange), fun games, dancing + lots of talking and getting to know each other (maybe even a chance for a romance?).

Outline of a day’s schedule:
      8.00 – 9.00 am: Breakfast
      9.00 – 11.30 am: Lectures and discussions
      11.30 am: Coffee Break

IDAS is finished. Winners of the Tournament are Simon Grabrovec (Slovenia) and Jake Meany (USA) as the closing opposition..
Other teams in Finals: Urška Derganc (Slovenija) and Filip Popovič (Slovak republic) opening government; Špela Kunej and Špela Kranjc (Slovenia), closing government; Primož Karnar (Slovenia) and Ivan Velev (Bolgarija), oppening opposition.

DAY 5 - Last chance to learn

This was the last chance, to try tricks in practice debates. Is knifing a good strategy? Well, if you did not try it, don’t to it on the Turnaments, that starts on day 6. So come back to see some more pics and the results of the Tournament. Pictures come shortly.

DAY 4 - Ask the USA if you dare

Next to every day lectures, worshops and practice debate, the day was something special.
Meeting with the Ambasador of the USA in Slovenia mr. Thomas B. Robertson. Without the USA we would probably speak Russian, German or Serbian on this even is one of the things he told us, to start sparks in our mind, as he staded. Of course, questions from the debaters were no jokes, so he had to find answers on why the USA bombed civilian buildings in Serbia (remember China ambasy?), why spreading human rights and democracy means torture and using Chemical weapons etc. He behaved as a good Ambasador, defendig the USA stand point, some say in a good, some say in a not so good way. Pictures come shortly.

DAY 3 - Take a breath if you find time

If you have seen the schedule, you know, that ZiP and WDI are not making jokes, when it comes to work on the academy. But any how, to take a break and get to know something new about the hosting city, we got to meet the Mayor of Slovenj Gradec.

DAY 2 - Hello hard work

Theres not much time to lose at a 7 days debate event, so the real work starts right away. Morning lectures are a every day thing, so they surprised us today in the midle of the night folowed by the workshops, some of them aslo included winning a new BMW.

DAY 1 - Getting Started

After all the arriving and Simon and Primož (aka Sunshine) doing all the logistics, the first day was not only fun, but first workshops started, and for all of us getting warmed up for debating, the first exhibition debate was presented.
Debate academy is all about meeting people, getting to know new cultures and cultural differencies, and of course getting to know the country, where you traveled to.

The focus of the training will be on international security - a very relevant, interesting topic currently discussed by many scientists and politicians. Reform of the UN, pre-emptive attack on Iraq, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, Darfur crisis - these are just some of the issues this topic covers. Participants will be provided with a research package that will provide them with basic knowledge. Even though these content will be very important, the main emphasis will still be on the debate training itself.

Debate academy 03 was a great sucess, so we decided, to make it an annual thing, and make it bigger in year 2004, of course with the cooperation with the World debate Institute, Vermont.

Making it bigger also meant making it in a bigger hotel, and we found a great place in a small town called Ormož. In Hotel Ormož we hosted 75 participants from 13 countries, Lithuania, Latvia, USA, Slovenia, Slovakia, Russia, Croatia, Macedonia, UK, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Sweden.

Because of the bigger number of participants we invited more trainers, so we were glad to host and listen to:
- Alfred C. Snider aka Tuna, World debate Institute
- Joseph O Zompetti, Illinois State University
- Steve Lanos
- Branka Josimov
- Harold Rait

Debate academy is not all about the debate, that`s why we prepared some other interesting activities, one of them a round table discoussion, a Public forum about the relationship between USA and Europe and we were glad to host the ambassador of United States of America in Slovenia mr. Thomas Bolling Robertson and the ambasador of the delegations of European Union in Slovenia mr. Erwan Fouréré.
It was also newer boring in the evenings. The participants could go for a wine tasting in the Ormoz Wine cellar, to taste the great local wines, newertheless Ormoy lies in one of the best wine regions in Slovenia, a Kitch party is also an annual ewent on the Debate academy (thats why all the weird dressed people on the photos), an International everning (presenting each country with local food and drinks), and all the other evenings were free, to party as you wish. And there was no-one bored

The main theme of all the workshop`s on the Debate academ< were the relations between United States and the European Union on different levels (economy, security, politics, culture etc.) in an structured and educational way.

In the year 2003 we had prepared the first International debate academy, that took place in October at the Student dormitory DIC in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Every thing should start small, so we started with 30 participants, students from Slovenia, and some debaters from Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany.
Head trainer was Alfred C. Snider aka Tuna from University of Vermont, USA, and he had help from the Slovenian trainers Mateja Peter, Beti Hohler, Anja Serc and Bojana Skrt.

We invited also people, that didn`t had any debate experience to join in and discover the grear debate world and some of them are still debating
